During 2004 the Metro Centre carried out a 30 million major expansion of the current shopping complex with an extension of the ‘Red Mall’ and a new multi-storey car park.
Debenhams now occupy the ‘show piece’ element of the extension with a 3-storey fully air conditioned retail facility complete with restaurant, cafe venue, beauty, hall, hairdressing etc.
Norstead were contracted to carry out the installation and commissioning of all the mechanical services as lead co-ordinator in conjunction with associated trades, and this was successfully achieved in a timeous and professional manner to the satisfaction of our demanding client.
A major portion of the works involved engineering and installing 17 packaged rooftop air handling plants and associated control panels, ductwork, insulation and diffusers together with natural gas to each packaged burner. Each unit comprised of filtration, gas heating, DX cooling, supply/extract fans and control panels to enable comfort conditions to be maintained all year round with constantly changing occupancy levels. Smoke extract systems comprising fire rated roof fans, ductwork and ‘conlit’ insulation were installed to ensure public safety is given priority to the satisfaction of the relevant enforcing authorities. General ventilation to meet all necessary regulations and client specific requirements were installed. A fully automatic DDC BMS system was installed networked to give remote adjustment, fault indication and status of all mechanical plant.
VRV air conditioning systems were installed generally in the restaurant, kitchen and back-of-house areas providing local comfort conditions again all networked to a central controller. All public health and domestic services were installed using high quality sanitary appliances and state-of-the-art basin taps etc. An oil installation was installed to cater for the needs of the stand-by generator.
Main entrance / exit doors have electric over door heaters and ancillary areas such as loading dock, stores etc. have independent heating / vent systems.
